BANKING & CURRENCY

The New Zealand Dollar is the unit of currency throughout the Cook Islands, supplemented by notes and coinage minted for local use. Local coins and notes are not negotiable outside the Cook Islands, but are sought after by collectors and make memorable and lasting souvenirs.

Westpac and ANZ banks are located in the central Avarua shopping district, and are open Mon-Fri from 9am to 3pm. ANZ extends its hours on Friday to 4pm, and Westpac is open from 9am-12pm on Saturdays. ATM services are located outside both banks as well as Cooks Corner, Nikao, Arorangi, Vaimaanga, Muri and the International Airport. EFTPOS is available at most stores, restaurants, bars, hotels and resorts.

Westpac and ANZ have branches on Aitutaki, along with ATM machines. Westpac has a branch on Atiu at the Central Store in Teenui.

Western Union has an office in Avarua offering money exchange and transfers.
